Shall we talk (rant) about A.I 🤖

I’ll cut straight to the point, A.I is really effecting my mental health, it’s scares me! Maybe I’m overreacting because new enquires for work are slow right now. But it’s summer, it’s always quiet right?

Wherever I tread both creatively and technically, it seems that A.I is treading on my toes… it is EVERYWHERE… it knows better?

Should I be embracing it more than I already do? I don’t want to get left behind? Don’t get me wrong it’s great for some things. But at the same time I honestly can’t stand what it’s turning into and I don’t want to embrace and run with it! I’ll be stood with my traditionalist pitch fork trying to make it go away.

My main issue is that it’s really sapping the human creativity out of the world and I’m not here for that. The design world is now saturated with slop that all looks the same. Where is the joy in starting with a blank piece of paper. Spending actual time getting creative, thinking, using your brain. Why do we need everything instantly? Now everyone expects everything to be even more instant than ever before. Have you done that yet? I could do that in seconds. Look at this T-shirt design I designed (you mean Claude)….

I’ve dedicated more than half of my life learning skills, honing my craft as a developer and designer for them to be devalued at an alarming pace. I’m not sure it’s going away and I find myself scrubbing around for the answers - which I don’t have!

Yesterday I even had my work “marked” by an AI prompt, informing me that this is not print ready but overall you’ve done a good job robots pats me on the back…. But you have no concept of what the final product is? Meh!

I’m really not here for this - yes I’m an old fart. I want to live in a more simple world when the web was crafted. It was raw we were all learning as humans together. Everything wasn’t a cookie cutter, let’s all look the same thing - things took time. We used photographers, designers, creatives - we sat and wrote code.

Remember when Twitter was good… just words, original content - real life. It’s now just a wash of A.I generated videos - why do we even need these? The world is wonderful without this constant brain washing from slop. Sigh

You can’t be fully against it, it’s great for solving complex number crunching, writing SQL queries etc. But when it comes to creative stuff - I really can’t get on bored with it. How much of my work/code has been stolen in the process? I’ve spent hours trying to write a sticker app last year - to find out someone’s done exactly the same with Claude… Disheartening. The longer it goes on I wonder why I’ve bothered spending hours for my skills to stolen and then replaced by a robot.

What’s the point of this post? I am tiniest voice in the world, I’m not going to change anything – it’s certainly not going away anytime soon. Yes, it gets it off my chest – but what does the future really hold? Is A.I going to take my job? Is it really better at writing PHP than me? It’s definitely knocking my confidence right now. The age old “I’m not good enough” imposter syndrome.

I guess the real point of this post is that the next time you need something creative. Ask is A.I REALLY the right tool for this? Don’t actually ask A.I it will definitely try and impress you… It will most definitely write you some code but is it ready for the real world?

Maybe just maybe try supporting another human with real experience in the real world.

ps. Sorry for any errors. I enjoy writing. Yes it's not my strongest skill (sorry to all my English teachers) but I refuse on principle on this occasion to let A.I proof read this. Probably a legitimate case for using it!
